|Art on the Underground presents|
|Underground Heroes by David Blandy
June 2009 - December 2009
Underground Heroes brings together artist David Blandy and young people and staff from Fairbridge in London's Kennington Centre. Inspired by comic books tales of heroic quests, each young person has created a superhero persona that draws upon their own interests and aspirations. With the assistance of photographer Tom Wichelow, costume designer Jenny Hayton and make-up artists Amita Rallin and Antigoni Livieratou, the group have been transformed into their characters for a series of photographic portraits to be displayed at the entrance to Charing Cross Underground station. The young people also devised their own heroic adventures with David Blandy and illustrator Inko for a trail of comic strips along the foot tunnel at Embankment station.

About the exibition:
Join the maverick Materials Library for an experimental and experiential insight into the art and science of hair and its connection to the human body, culture and society. Come and enjoy an evening of specially created hands-on activities in the 'Medicine Man' and 'Medicine Now' galleries, as well as talks from hair specialists. Guests will have the opportunity to reacquaint themselves with the materiality of hair and to explore our obsession with it through a series of encounters, including spinning, knitting, shaving, styling, waxing and microscopic analysis. Cut, shave, wax and wear hair with experts such as wig makers, barbers, hair stylists, chemists, theatrical make-up artists and canine coiffeurs. Come with your own exciting hairstyle, beard or moustache to show off - or simply try one out while you are here. This event has been produced by Materials Library.
